Explore the enchantment of Hida’s jinja (shrines) in a captivating world of festivals and immersive dances. Here, participants perform with gratitude and prayers to the Kami to honor the deities.
The mesmerizing dancers, known as “maihime,” take center stage in these sacred dances. Each year, the most talented girls are selected from middle schools in different areas to assume this special role.
At the Japan Matsuri 2023, you will have the privilege of witnessing an authentic performance! A dance master and a maihime will present two enchanting dances: “Toyosaka no mai” and “Urayasu no mai.” Let yourself be carried away by their graceful movements as the magic comes to life before your eyes.
But that’s not all: delve into the wonders of Kamioka and Furukawa through a captivating photographic presentation. You’ll behold breathtaking glimpses of their respective matsuri, which vividly narrate the history of these two cities. Moreover, an enthralling video showcasing the legendary “shishimai,” a lion dance from a small region, will evoke a sense of nostalgia.
However, we must confront the somber reality of depopulation that has impacted today’s matsuri. But fret not! During the Japan Matsuri, you’ll have an extraordinary opportunity to partake in a unique experience through collaboration with Taiko Lecco. A Hida performer will astound you with a spectacular Tengu dance performance. It will be an explosion of rhythm and passion—an unmissable occasion to immerse yourself in the overwhelming energy of this age-old tradition.
Prepare to be enthralled by the vibrant spirit of Hida, where past and present intertwine in a whirlwind of emotions and celebrations.
