Paper Monsters: Between Tale and Representation

A conference-performance presented by Pino Zema and Rossella Marangoni exploring the realm of monsters

Yōkai are Japanese creatures of the supernatural. But how many of them exist? Menacing demons, mischievous and mutated animals, grotesque hags who prey on men and children: a multitude of monstrous beings, sometimes deeply wicked and at other times benevolent towards humans who have shown them kindness. In this exceptional conference-performance, Rossella Marangoni will weave tales of some of the existing yōkai using prints, vibrant imagery, and inspirations drawn from the fairy tales narrated by Pino Zema through Kamishibai, the ancestral “paper theater” that foreshadowed Manga. This performative art form has captivated countless children in Japan, who eagerly gathered to be enthralled by stories of monsters, animals and young heroes.

A magic experience that for the first time will be brought to life at Japan Matsuri for the amusement of children of all ages.
