Charming Assassins: The “Poisonous” Women in Modern Japan

Join us to uncover the intriguing and criminal history of some female outlaws in modern Japan! Known as dokufu, the “poison women,” they sometimes used knives and daggers, not just poison, and sometimes didn’t kill at all. They lived between the Tokugawa and Meiji periods, and their stories captivated the Japanese public. Popular novels, scandalous press, theater, and later cinema made them famous: but what do we really know about them?

Rossella Marangoni, a renowned Japanologist, will guide you through a lesser-known side of Japan in this free course that is sure to fascinate you.
