Karate: History, Technique and Discipline

When the people of Okinawa were deprived of their weapons, what remained?

Let’s take a journey back in time, approximately five hundred years. On the islands of Okinawa, during the Ryukyu Kingdom, a strict and long-standing prohibition on weapons was imposed. Deprived of the ability to carry swords and bladed weapons, the inhabitants developed an art of unarmed self-defence: this is how Karate-Do, the “Way of the Empty Hand”, was born.

The young practitioners of Shintai Karate-Do Lugano will take to the Japan Matsuri stage to show-case the beauty and power of this ancient martial art. Through a performance exploring the roots of karate, they will also demonstrate the elegance of its forms and the power of combat.

Don’t miss this demonstration: the history, discipline and spirit of karate… unarmed, on the Japan Matsuri 2026 stage, Sunday, 20 September at 11:30.
