Ukiyo-e

Discover the art of ukiyo-e through a hands-on introduction to traditional Japanese woodblock printing. During this workshop, you'll learn how to carve a small woodblock using woodcarving gouges, prepare the ink, and produce a hand-pulled print.

You'll explore the bokashi technique—the delicate colour gradations that are characteristic of ukiyo-e prints—as well as the use of multiple printing blocks to create striking layered effects.

Combining Western and Japanese materials, you'll create your own handcrafted print inspired by this timeless artistic tradition.

At the end of the workshop, you'll take your carved woodblock home, allowing you to continue printing and practising the techniques you've learned.
